I want back my country

THE EDITOR: I feel physically sick this morning. I just heard that another person was kidnapped last night. How many this year? How many in the last month?" It is beyond ridiculous. I can understand why these people are the targets — they or their parents have worked hard all their lives in order to ensure that their families enjoy all that life has to offer. Some of these people started from very humble beginnings but were determined to make a better life for themselves and their families. Only to have some bunch of idiots steal practically everything from them.

They steal their children. They steal their money. They steal their peace of mind. They steal their sense of security. They steal their faith in people. They steal so much by their one act. But they do not care about any of that. All they care about is that "they (victim’s family) have and we (kidnappers) don’t have so we will take from them so that we have what they had."

This reasoning is so flawed but this flawed reasoning is what has this country in the current situation. To make matters worse, the government is not making even the feeblest attempt to solve this problem. Is it possible that in their ivory towers they cannot see what is happening to this beautiful country of ours?

Why is it so difficult for the powers-that-be to do something about this situation? Why is it that they could not be bothered about doing anything about it? Is it because the targets are mainly East Indians and they couldn’t care less? I have never considered leaving this country to live elsewhere, but I am now seriously thinking about it.

My family is the most important thing to me and, although I understand there is no guarantee anywhere that everything will be perfect, at least I know they will be much safer elsewhere. Peace of mind is a very important factor. I really love this country and I really do not want to go anywhere else.

We need to do something now. I want back the lovely country we once had. I know things were not perfect before — nothing is perfect — but it was a wonderful place to live. Now, you say to your children,

"Be careful." But what exactly does that mean? How careful can you be on the road, in the mall, even in your house. I want back my country.
