Eight ways to reduce traffic congestion

THE EDITOR: Why are we sharing the public roads with the following drivers? 1) Drivers without a driving permit and Insurance (no driver’s permit) 2) Drivers without a valid driving permit and or insurance (expired). 3) Drivers under the influence of Alcohol and or Drugs (unfit to drive). 4) Drivers with poor vision (unable to read a vehicle number from a distance of six car lengths). 5) Drivers with one hand on the steering wheel using cell phones. 6) Drivers, passengers and children in vehicles not wearing seat belts. (Seat belts save lives). 7) PH drivers (no insurance cover for hire). 8) Drivers of vehicles which are a danger or potential danger because of their condition-anything from overloading to defective brakes, lights, steering and tyres (not roadworthy). If we can take all these drivers and vehicles off the public highway, we could significantly reduce road accidents, casualties — a responsibility we all share.

On the subject of driving permit. Consideration should be given to an increase from three years to ten years and a renewal notice sent to permit holders one month before the expiry date.

The road user and the law, failure to comply such a person or persons should be prosecuted. Other consequences of offending drivers, could be the vehicle used to commit the offence confiscated. If action is taken against all the offending drivers, this could reduce the volume of traffic on the Public Highway by 20 percent or more.
