Religious assassination
THE EDITOR: Assassination of individuals and annihilation of groups of people is a repetitive theme of history. States have attacked states; countries have fought against their neighbour and against nations from their borders. Hordes of people living in the steppes and deserts conquered nations with ancient civilisations; blood was shed by all religions. Sometimes blood was spilled in the name of honour, sometimes in the name of revenge for supposed wrong. Sometimes angry hordes overran peaceful lands in search of food sometimes in world domination, but; more often the blood of man was shed in the name of his "Creator". Religion is used as an excuse for mass murders, seeing this aspect of human nature makes one wonder if mankind is not the most ruthless species on earth, one expects religion to teach man to be civilised yet religion drips with blood. The history of religion in any part of the world at any time is the history of torture, repression, executions and crucifixion. It is disappointing indeed to find that religion, which is supposed to be the last refuge of peace in a world of war and conflict is the cause of destruction and bloodshed. Religion itself is not the real cause of mass murders, it is a mistake to think that of it, religion was not given to man to encourage killing. But the question remains, at first glance, why does history create the impression that religion sanctions bloodshed and murder in the name of peace? SURESH MARAJ Curepe
