Gambling is evil
THE EDITOR: With respect to an article with heading "Court of Appeal to Rule: Is gambling wrong and sinful?" I humbly hasten to support the fact that it s a wrong and sinful practice. The Government some years ago (and again in ignorance) legalised whe whe now play whe and casinos but this is wrong in the sight of God. Permit me to corroborate my statement with a few Bible references (a) Proverbs 13:11 says... "Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished, but he that gathereth by labour shall increase." (Gambling is included in vanity here.) (b) Proverbs 28: 20.. "A faithful man shall abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich shall not go unpunished or shall not be innocent." (c) 1 Timothy 6:9-10... "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition." For the love of money is the root of all evil. Evil is sin and is wrong. Those who do not regard or believe God’s word will not agree with this, but this is where the church gets this principle. I wonder if people are aware of how many marriages and homes are broken, and relationships between children and fathers are destroyed because of gambling? I can give many examples of homes where this (I’m speaking of horse racing gambling) is taking place at present. Men who are addicted leave their homes every day with their wages, pensions or salaries, or even borrowed money to gamble. Those who work find themselves in betting pools at lunch time; some do it during working hours. They lose, then go to their working wives and "draw out" or "force out" from them all they can get. Those homes have become dysfunctional, and it is a more traumatic experience for the wives who are unemployed, because when most or all of the husband’s wages "go down the drain" in gambling they return home empty-handed. Families are left without food and essentials, and chaos results. GERTRUDE EDWARDS Tacarigua
