Police Commissioner engaging in public relations
THE EDITOR: I am moved to refer to your editorial "Little hope in crime-solving" Re Monday’s Newsday of October 17, 2005. You are no doubt correct when you say that citizens will have little faith in Police Commissioner Trevor Paul’s assurance that the police have good leads in the dustbin bombings. How incessantly have we heard that? But yet the criminals have become more emboldened, because of slipshod and haphazard investigation which brings me to the question, Is there a desperate need for a more comprehensive and more modern deeper training for the police service detective? Permit me to quote the police commissioner whom I want to label as a public relations officer and a politician because every time there is a kidnapping, murder, or detonation of a dustbin bomb hear the Commissioner: "We will be relentless in our pursuit of all criminals, and there will be zero tolerance of any misdemeanour, as the police will be enforcing the law in every aspect of national life." May I tell the Commissioner that he is offering vague and nebulous generalities instead of specific promises. The country’s citizens expects you to introduce new strategies and tactics that your officers will apply in order to see tangible results. HARRY P T CHARLIE Princes Town
