Ugly vending carts
THE EDITOR: I would like the Mayor of Port-of-Spain to be aware of a situation that’s developing in Port-of-Spain. Motorists are faced with vendors pushing unsightly carts along Independence Square on a daily basis. These carts sometimes have things protruding that can damage someone’s vehicle. If a motor vehicle is scratched, who’s going to pay for the damage? Maybe, Mr Murchinson Brown and his engineers could design a decent, sanitary, inexpensive vending cart, have all vendors register with the City Corporation and pay a small fee to rent these vending carts. This would give a more uniformed and hygienic look to the vending situation in our city, more in keeping with Vision 2020. Another serious problem along Independence Square and South Quay, is the problem of pedestrians crossing between motor vehicles without any discretion. Apparently, pedestrians feel that they have the right-of-way all the time. There is usually a traffic cop on Broadway and South Quay but it matters not to the pedestrians as they never stop walking in between the vehicles even though the traffic cop is calling on the vehicles. The very same situation takes place at the Cipriani Roundabout, and Charlotte and Independence Square. Would the powers that be please do something about these serious occurrences in our city. Let us not wait for somebody’s vehicle to be damaged by these ugly vending carts, or for a pedestrian to be knocked down before something is done to rectify these problems in our city centre. SUZANNA GOMEZ Port-of-Spain
