Town and Country Planning not doing its job
THE EDITOR: What are the building codes for a residential property? What are the reasons for these codes? Can we build without a permit along a government road? Were these codes up-dated since independence? Someone said: "It used to be 25 feet from a major road frontage, 15 feet from a minor road frontage, and 10 feet from the bound of an adjoining lot." What are they now? Were fires, security, and peace of mind some of the reasons that those distances were mandated? Can an adjoining neighbour give verbal or written consent to the other adjoining party to erect a building directly on their common bound? Can an individual give consent to his neighbour to break the (Government Laws) building codes? Is that not the job of the lawmakers in Parliament? At present, a popular church on El Socorro Road is extending their building directly on the adjoining bounds and claiming, "they got permission," two buildings further up, another owner is building a castle starting on the pavement, which severely obstructs all forms of traffic including fire trucks and ambulances in emergencies. Is this building not a national security risk? Everybody doing what they want. Come to think of it, all the lands in El Socorro south of the highway are zoned agriculture, yet they are filled with industrial buildings. Where are you Town and Country Planning Division? Are we living in a free for all country? C ROOOPNARINE San Juan
