Good to see co-operation between PNM, UNC

THE EDITOR: It is refreshing to see the parliamentary harmony between the UNC and PNM parties on this all important issue of controlling the ever-spiraling national crime statistics, especially as they relate to murders and kidnappings. I am happy to see them united in Parliament on the passing of the amendment to the Bail Act as it relates to kidnapping for ransom. I believe this effort will bolster both party’s image among their constituents that they are serious about doing something to stem the tide that is threatening to devour us in blood and gore. I hope this new-found “unity” (and “maturity” according to PM Manning) will not soon disappear and that they will continue to hammer out these other pieces of legislation, as they relate to crime-fighting and law and order in the country. Their need for action is beyond party politics, as these runaway crime numbers affect us all in one way or another.

Now that the Act is now law, when exactly will it take effect? Will it sit in anguish as the OSHA Act, the Breathalyser Act and other vital pieces of legislation that have been passed, some for years and yet have never been put in place? I believe the government ought to do all in their power to expeditiously put this law into effect sooner rather than later. The people of TT cannot wait any longer, and as AG John Jeremie so aptly said, “we have had enough” and it is time to we take back control of our lives so the criminals can be dealt with and the law-abiding can live without fear. So, Mr PM and AG, fast track this Act and put it into effect immediately.
