TT, a killing paradise
THE EDITOR: The appetite for news and more news has obviously caused a frenzy in and around the world especially when it emanates from Trinidad and Tobago. In the United States and am sure in other parts of the world where natives have been given new citizenships, the thirst I presume is the same. Practically everyday one has to get a quick glimpse of the progression of crimes and wonder if one’s family name has appeared on the corpse list. As of today we have learned that the number of murders are far more the number of days gone by. Perhaps. It is no longer one a day but now it is a few a day. Many suggestions have been contributed in attempt to avert or control the killings but none have produced constructive abatement. We heard the invocation of God, the bible, prayers, clergymen, politicians, blimps, police, regiment, gun boats, tracking devices, hanging, no bail, new laws, UNC and PNM, amnesty etc. Nothing seemed as a suitable deterrent. On the other hand, the criminals are boasting how good they are and how many more they have added to their list per month. While the crimes are committed and originated at the bottom, the government and its institutions are attempting to catch or prevent crimes from the top. It is not to say that the PNM cannot control the murders in TT but I rather say the PNM is negligent when it comes to saving lives. It is as if well one more life less to feed or provide housing or economic sustenance. It appears as gross negligence from a government who under oath promised safety and security to its citizens but after being powered abandoned its citizens. And in the quest for relief man has no alternative but to look for God’s help because our commander on earth has his hands tied behind his back. I have never seen God’s intervention into solving crimes but I have seen Bernard Kerick, a Giuliani commissioner reduced crimes significantly in New York and Mexico. The PNM is simply turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to the clamour for help. Mastrofoki is reaping a huge sum of money for advice on crimes. The FBI and yardies have also made great strides in providing advice on how to stop the killings. Has anything worked? Obviously not, because murders per day is way ahead in contrast with counting days. J RAKHAR President of Association of TT in New York
