Many ‘questionable’ characters in church
THE EDITOR: The recent decision of the Court of Appeal denying a betting pool licence is a real shocker. According to the newspaper reports the Court said some persons of questionable characters frequent betting shops. How do the judges know that? Do they go to these shops? I have been and have not seen persons of questionable character. Who are persons of questionable character anyway? Since when that is a reason for denying a person use of their premises? Many questionable characters go to church. The Court also said the traffic in Port-of-Spain escalated to crisis proportions and punters had a habit of parking indiscriminately (where did they get that from?) so that congestion is a factor against the pool getting a licence. Well I suppose we should have no betting pools at all in the city or no more large businesses for that matter because they will attract customers and increase traffic congestion. The Court said the majority of society would see the court’s allowing a betting shop adjacent to a church as erosion of our collapsing society. How can they possibly say that when so many people play lotto and play whe; so many churches get permission to hold raffles, when so may attend races; when so many play national lottery. I find it hard to take these judges seriously. No wonder the Privy Council reverse them so often. JOHN FRASIER Santa Cruz
