TT cycling team in Los Angeles
A THREE-MAN cycling team led by the Cycling Federation’s nominee for the First Citizens Bank Sports Foundation Awards Azikwe Kellar is currently taking part in the Cycling World Cup in Los Angeles, United States. Also in the team are Haseem Mc Lean and Christopher Sellier, both of whom performed with distinction during the past year. The contingent also comprise manager Caryl Kellar, father of Azikwe and mechanic Ian Mc Lean who were joined by United States based coach Roger Farrell and physiotherapist Frank Breese on Friday. Competition’s duration is three days and the cyclists would contest several events such as the Flying 200, Keirin, Kilometre events and the major event, the Team Sprint. The Trinidad and Tobago cyclists will be hoping to capitalise on the opportunity of riding on a top quality facility and advance to the next round by meeting the qualifying times for the Team Sprint. Cyclists who meet the qualifying times will also be selected to ride at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia. The cyclists are required to meet a qualifying time of 47 seconds. However at a recent trial at the Arima Velodrome last weekend, a number of cyclists failed to make the time with the best being 50 seconds. The cyclists will have their work cut out for them coming up against a number of international cyclists and Britain who presently hold the Team Sprint world record. German Max Levy is also expected to be a tough challenger along with Jamaican Ricardo Lynch who is currently attending the UCI University in Switzerland.
