Gomez advances in Digicel tennis

At the Eddie Taylor Public Courts, King George V Park, St Clair, the 12th seed Gomez trounced Germany’s Delf Gohlke, the eighth seed, 6-2, 6-3, in their third round battle.

Gomez’s opponent in the quarter-finals will be fourth seed Stefano Napolitano of Italy, who got past 15th seed Andrew Adams of the United States 7-5, 6-2.

Number one seed Marco Nunez of Mexico needed three sets to beat Max Peara of Great Britain 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 while his quarter-final opponent, ninth seed Clay Crawford of Great Britain, edged Trinidad and Tobago’s Vaughn Wilson 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The other quarter-final line-ups read Bar Tzuf Botzer of Israel against Alberto Cammarata of Italy, and United States’ Gianluca Argentini versus Christian Oliver Lee of Malaysia. Botzer, ranked seventh, crushed Santiago Cevallos of Mexico 6-0, 6-1; Cammarata defeated 13th seed Dawoud Kabli of Trinidad and Tobago 7-6 (2), 6-2; Argentini blanked Efrain Alvarado of Venezuela 6-3, 6-4 and Lee upset 14th seed Matteo Donati of Italy 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Top seed Gaia Sanesi booked her place in the girls’ singles semi-finals with a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over number six ranked Beatrice Cedermark of Sweden. Sanesi will now face Daria Sharapova — sister of leading world player Maria — after the Belarus native and fifth seed cruised past fourth seed Clementina De Paola of Venezuela 6-3, 6-4. Emma Onila of Canada, ranked number two, swept past Rebecca Faltusz of Germany 6-1, 6-3 while third seed Christine Kandler of Austria ousted Francoise Abanda of Canada 7-6 (6), 6-2. Onila and Kandler are scheduled to meet in the other semi. The second round of the boys’ doubles also took place yesterday.

Top ranked Donati and Napolitano of Italy blanked Jan Krouham of Mexico and Jovani Lewis of Trinidad and Tobago 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals, where they will meet the Trinidad and Tobago seventh-seeded pair of Seve Day and Luke De Caires. Day and De Caires got the better of Karim Arem of the United States and Ricky Medinilla of Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. Third seeds Jason Michael Lee and Christian Oliver Lee of Malaysia whipped Thomas Kohn of the United States and Henry Moore of Great Britain 6-3, 6-3 while Trinidad and Tobago’s Dawoud Kabli and American Argentini eliminated Adams and Spencer Mitchell of the United States 3-6, 6-3, 10-3.

Fifth ranked Sander Brendmoe of Norway and Ibian Hodgson of Aruba cruised past Venezuela’s Alvarado and Jabrille Kabli of Trinidad and Tobago 6-4, 6-3; the Trinidad and Tobago duo of Wilson and Adrian De Silva got the better of Germany’s Gohlke and Julien Kardell 6-4, 4-6, 10-2.

Mexico’ s Nunez and Joe Pablo Gil of Costa Rica, ranked sixth, whipped Yannik James of Grenada and Ture Skinner of Barbados 6-3, 6- 2 while Grayson Goldin of the United States and Great Britain’s Peara shocked the second-seeded British duo of Crawford and Damian Gryzelko 1-6, 7-5, 10-5. In the girls’ doubles quarter-finals, the number one seeded pair of Canadian Onila and Barbora Lazarova of Slovakia trounced the local duo of Dayle Angus and Shania Millington 6-0, 6-1.

Onila and Lazarova will meet Sharapova and Abanda in the semis, after the Belarusian and Canadian overcame Kandler and Colombian Laura Ucros 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.

Fourth ranked pair Cedermark and Naomi Totka of Hungary strolled past Faltusz and Great Britain’s Ekta Sharma 6-4, 6-1 while Lauren May of the United States and Valeria Salazar of Mexico blanked TT’s Lee-Ann Lingo and Barbados’ Alyssa Fuentes 7-5, 6-4.

Action continues today while the final day of the week-long tournament is Saturday.
