Goodwood High’s CAPE results ‘inconclusive’

In a statement on Tuesday, the Education Division of the Tobago House of Assembly said there were some challenges in Trinidad regarding the results.

THA’s Division said Education Secretary Claudia Groome-Duke was informed students at Goodwood High would have to wait for the results as the Education Ministry in Trinidad experienced some challenges with its computers while tabulating the results. The other four Tobago schools and centres at which students wrote the CAPE examinations – Bishop’s High School, Signal Hill Secondary Comprehensive, UWI Sixth Form, and Scarborough Secondary – were not affected.

The statement said the results for Goodwood High students would remain until the situation was rectified by the Education Ministry. Newsday also understands inconsistencies and errors were noted by the Caribbean Examination Council as it related to students’ registration.

The Education Division assured affected students it was working assiduously to ensure that they would get their results in a timely manner.

Despite this, the Division was able to provide statistical data for the overall performance of Tobago students.

According to the figures released by the Division, of the 354 students who wrote CAPE in Tobago this year (as opposed to 259 last year), 84.5 per cent attained Grades 1-V, while 15.4 per cent got Grades V1-V11.

Overall, 84.8 percent of female students secured Grades 1-V, while 81 per cent of males got Grades 1-V.

With respect to the compulsory subject areas of Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies, 90.3 per cent of the students obtained Grades 1-V, while for Unit 1 subjects, 79.3 per cent of those students secured Grades 1-V, and for Unit 2 subjects, 88. 4 per cent got Grades 1-V.

Questions emailed by Newsday to the Ministry of Education have not yet been answered.
