Hottest make-up trends for 2010
For 2010, MAC Cosmetics has identified four of the hottest make-up trends - Dye-A-Tribe, American Nomad, Underground Society and Pale N Dandy. Out of these, Espinet has identified two trends appropriate for people of the Caribbean, which he predicts would be a hit here in the coming months.
One is Dye-A-Tribe, from the MAC To The Beach face collection, which according to Espinet is about playing with clean, bright colours which are not heavy and opaque.
“Dye-A-Tribe is translucent colour wearable in hot weather. It’s about blending and fading out the colours nicely. Dye-A-Tribe is primarily colours of coral, pink and turquoise green,” Espinet explained. The second trend suitable for the Caribean is American Nomad, which is a lot more natural and according to Espinet, is discreet and effortless.
“This is a desert tan and a new way of achieving a bronze look It’s not about colour but more about structure and playing with shading and looking refined.”
Espinet, who has worked backstage at Fashion Week in New York and Milan and who has also worked with top design houses, including Armani, Chloe and Chanel, said make-up is treated in different ways depending on its purpose.
He said he would like to get people, especially those in the Caribbean, to start thinking about their purpose for wearing makeup. He advised women to experiment, change, and update.
According to Espinet, in places like Milan and London, make-up usually has two purposes – trend and re-invention. However, in the Caribbean make-up is usually used for one purpose – to look glamorous. He said using make-up should not be about looking the same as everyone else but about projecting emotion and attitude. “Because of the hot environment for women in the Caribbean, minimal coverage is key. Not every time you put on make-up you have to look like a glamour queen. You can use make-up to look cool or well groomed or trendy.
“You don’t always have to look like you are about to enter a runway. You should rethink your make-up every time. Sometimes you should be able to go without make up which says you are very comfortable within yourself,” he said.
