Prestige gives to Petit Seminaire
As January 12 marked the first anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, the company and employees agreed it would be best to target Haiti’s educational needs at this time and donated the funds to the Petit Seminaire College, Saint Martial, one of Haiti’s educational institutions which was badly damaged by the earthquake.
The school was founded in 1861 to train young men who wanted to become priests.
Four years later it became a school for boys and in 1871 the Archbishop of Port au Prince transferred the responsibility of the School to the Holy Ghost Missionaries and it became one of the most prestigious schools in Haiti. After an intervening period under state management, the Archdiocese of Port au Prince returned the school in 1995 to the Holy Ghost Missionaries who worked diligently to bring the school back to its prior high standard.
The St Martial students have since achieved much success at state exams, at the entrance exams of the State University of Haiti, and generally wherever they go to further their education.
The school was reopened after the earthquake on April 19, 2010 following preliminary repairs to the buildings and currently educates a student population of 1,113 children (186 Kindergarten, 443 Primary and 485 Secondary) who attend classes in the temporary classrooms. The employees of Prestige Holdings Limited hope their donation would help to complete the necessary restoration to the school and bring some form of comfort and encouragement to its students, among the future developers of Haiti.
