Late start for Carib Beer Cricket Series

ST JOHN’S: This year’s Carib Beer Cricket Series will begin on November 25, two weeks later than scheduled, and the format will be changed to save money, cricket officials said.

The number of rounds will be reduced from ten to five, and the Carib Beer Challenge between the top four teams will end with a championship match between the two winners, the West Indies Cricket Board said Thursday.

The teams will play each other once this year, instead of holding matches at home and away. Last year, Jamaica defeated the Leeward Islands and became the champion on points.

The cricket board said that the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours programme has reduced its revenue by some US$8 million over the past four years.

"This has severely impacted on the Board’s finances making it necessary for the Board to restructure its operations and to undertake a comprehensive review of current expenditures," it said.

Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, Trinidad and the Windward Islands will participate in the series sponsored by the Trinidad-based beer company.
