Power Play win Preysal’s night cricket

On Friday last they defeated Taxi’s Tears in the final to take home the $4,000 cash prize and Ventures Credit Union Challenge Trophy.

Taxi’s Tears batted first and were skittled out for just 51 in 10 overs.

Sunil Sawh, who eventually made 15 began well until Power Play’s Ganesh Rambarack started the slide by taking two wickets for just 15 runs. In response Power Play cruised to the required target, reaching 55 for the loss of five wickets to secure the victory. Abid Emarali contributed 18 runs to the total before returned with the bat to make 19 to spearhead the victory. The win came in just six overs for their their fourth championship contested among 29 participating teams.

Taxi’s Tears claimed the $3,000 runners-up prize which was donated by Kaizen Environmental Services, while Strokers secured third place. Strokers got the better of Paradise Boyz in a play-off to earn the $1,500 prize which was sponsored by Transbrokerage. Dow Team finished fourth and collected the $800 cash prize for their effort.

In other special prizes that were given out, the best bastman of the league was Harnarine Moonesar of the Jonestown Survivors after he scored a hurricane 97 out of his team’s 110 in the preliminaries.

Joel Poliah of Strokers was also named the Most Promising Youth. The Top Bowler of the tournament was Surrendra Jaggessar who led with 43 wickets for the season, although his team failed to win anything in the competition.

Meanwhile Ikhwaan won the award for being the Most Discipline Team for the third consecutive year.

Presenting the prizes to the winners was Desmond Baxter of Venture Credit Union who hailed the night series as a useful community venture, serving to keep the Couva youths off the streets. He praised Couva South MP Kelvin Ramnath and Organising Committee for keeping the series alive and growing from strength to strength. Baxter said 159 matches were played throughout the season and it attracted more than 600 spectators.
