Hebron stay ahead in Full Gospel football

HEBRON stayed on course to cop the 2003 Full Gospel Churches Football League crown after they whipped Christian Printers Curepe Amen 2-0 at UWI Grounds, St Augustine last weekend. Amen bombarded the Hebron defence with a series of attacks in the first half, but failed to find the mark. Those errors would later haunt the Curepe lads in the second stanza, with Jude Rogers and Marius Pascall scoring for Hebron, who remain unbeaten after eight rounds of play.

The resurgent Deliverance Ministries (DM) Lyons climbed to second spot courtesy a 5-0 win over the bottom-placed DOXA at the Aranguez Savannah. Sherwin Fortune registered a hat-trick for Lyons with Richard Rigaud and Collin Selvon notching one apiece. Rhema also remained within touching distance of the leaders with a 9-0 demolition of Shekinah Worship Centre at the Macoya Recreation Ground, with Cion Valcin slamming five goals, while brother Robert, Lovell Sterling, David Gildin and Sean Peltea got one apiece.

Other Results: At Queen’s Park Savannah – WOODBROOK AIC (4) vs BETHEL (4); At Northerns Recreation Ground – GRANDE PRAISES (4) vs DESTINY WARRIORS (1); At Aranguez Savannah – AME BALLPLAYERS (2) vs GEMS (2), GRANDE PRAISES (5) vs WOODBROOK (0).

Windwards U-19 cricketer injured

“I HAVE a game to win!” That is what Windward Islands off spinner Asa Edwards wrote from his hospital bed last night after he lost his speech. Edwards dived head first into the metal railings of the Rohan Kanhai Stand in a valiant attempt to prevent an Aaron Ragoonath boundary yesterday afternoon on the first day of the TCL Group Regional Under 19 three day finals at Bourda. Edwards was unconscious for some two hours after the accident and lost his speech for three hours after that.

During the time that he could not speak Edwards used his hands to signal for writing implements and wrote the following message: Windwards “I have a game to win.” Manager Emmanuel Nathan said that the note was shown to the entire team and all the players have vowed to go out and win the match for Edwards since he risked his life for the team. “His note showed his strength and determination, his fighting spirit and I think it’s quite good for cricketers because he was just trying to save a boundary and it is part of the process of going out to win and fighting for his country,” an emotional Nathan said. When he was out for about two hours, it was quite frightening, there he was unable to move his head or his eyes or his feet or anything,” the manager said.

“We were wondering if this guy is going to be crippled for the rest of his life or whether he has any spinal injury and it was very, very, very scary,” Nathan said. The doctor said that the hit cramped up his entire body and it is taking some time to  release itself and be fully functional again,” the manager related. The report on Edwards is very positive as his attending doctor has promised to release him at lunch time today once there is no relapse. The doctor said that he anticipates that he will be able to play this afternoon and tomorrow once his body is fully ‘uncramped’ the manager told Windies Cricket. com. Edwards spent last night in the Prashad Hospital in Georgetown under observation and is expected to rejoin his team during the lunch session at Bourda.

Teenager kayaks around Trinidad

WHILE  most youths played football during their recent schools vacation, 14-year-old Dominic Wilkes set out to make local history. The Form 4 St Mary’s College student yesterday became the youngest kayaker to circumnavigate Trinidad when he docked at Williams Bay, Carenage. Wilkes and his dad Glen set off on their adventure on August 5, but four days into the trip Dominic suffered a back injury when they reached Point Cumana. He was advised against resuming his adventure right away by doctors, and only went back into his kayak after a 12-day recuperating period.

Resuming on August 21, a determined Dominic and his father went about completing the trip achieved by the older Michael Robertson and Glen Wilkes  in 1985. Wayne Crooks and Jean Talma circumnavigated both Trinidad and Tobago last year. Dominic jokingly said “one of my regrets was not having a towel, since after a bath I had to wait in wet clothes to dry off, and at times the sandflies were biting.” It was a proud mom Joann Rodney-Wilkes who welcomed back her son and husband at Williams Bay yesterday.

Sagicor Cup runners on ‘easy street’

ALL the major contenders in the Sagicor Independence Cup took things easy on the exrecise course at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday, a sign that preparations have been completed and  runners are now on easy street awaiting the big test on Monday. But while that was the situation with the 13 top guns set to fire over 1850 metres on the turf, this was not the case with some lesser lights who were seen sharpening up to compete in the smaller events on the 10-race holiday card. Female Bandit  has been a big dissapointment in her races to date, but if the manner in which she took to her work is a guide, then a saver is recommended in the Sagicor Life Saver 1350 metres contest.

The Quar Rampersad inmate posted 23.65 seconds over the last 400 metres of the course and continued her run before being eased in the backstretch. Mandela, who will line-up in the Sagicor Endowment Restricted Handicap seems to be enjoying himself since reverting to sprint distances. This was evident in his short sprint from the top of the straight to the winning line which was recorded in 24.17, seconds.

Alibi Iki and Mir On Fire showed their well-being in company over the 600 metres course. Alibi Iki was all over Uncle Joe in 37.42 seconds, and Mir On Fire had too much toes for Mystile in clocking 36.27. Sailor crushed to death aboard MF Panorama

A Tobago-born sailor aboard the MF Panorama was crushed to death yesterday when part of the cable to the vehicle ramp in the cargo area snapped, pinning him to the floor. Uwaine Anthony, 35, who had been living at Valsayn north, but was originally from Moses Hill, Lambeau, Tobago, was killed on the spot. “I ain’t eat; I can’t eat,” Franklyn Marcelle, a co-worker and friend of the deceased, told Newsday on the scene. “The man ain’t get a chance to say ‘aah’… Instant death!” he declared.

The incident reportedly occurred around midday and further delayed the departure of the Panorama which had been scheduled to leave for Trinidad at 11 am. The Panorama eventually departed Scarborough around 3.30 pm. The inter-island ferry had docked in Tobago behind schedule and was in the process of being loaded when the freak accident occurred. Co-workers in the cargo area and other Port officials stood around in a daze lamenting the tragedy. Some passengers cancelled their trip and disembarked the Panorama after learning of the incident. According to reports, Anthony was working on the western side of the cargo area when the “connector” to the cable which holds up the ramp on which vehicles are loaded, snapped. He was crushed beneath the ramp, and several cars already on the ramp were damaged. Anthony who recently purchased a house in Valsayn, where he had been living for years, was the son of a former captain of the inter-island ferry.

A police party headed by Insp Cyril Broomes, head of the Scarborough CID, including Sgts Jeffrey George, Winston Adams, Detective Andy Cunningham and other officers visited the scene. Fire Services officials were also on the scene with a tender which washed down the area. Insp Broomes is continuing investigations. The Chairman of the Port Authority, Noel Garcia yesterday instructed that when the Panorama docks at Port-of-Spain, a total overhaul is to be done by insurers, Lloyds of London, and the Port engineers. Garcia apologised for any delays in the sailing of the vessel, but maintained that people’s lives had to be put first. It is reported that an internal inquiry into the incident is underway.

‘Skelly’ re-appears in Court

SHELDON “Skelly” Lovell, labelled the country’s most wanted man, re-appeared in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court along with three other men yesterday, charged with kidnapping and falsely imprisoning 18-year-olds Yves Ayoung Chee and Benedict Barrette. Lovell, 31, of Pelican Extension Morvant is jointly charged with Reginald Gibson, 34, former Special Reserve Police officer (SRP), of Phase Four Beetham Gardens, Kenny Bonnett, 24, businessman, of Eastern Main Road, Laventille, and Sean “Gumbo” Vincent, 29, also of Pelican Extension Morvant. The charges were laid by Sgt Lynch of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

Ayoung Chee, of Scott Street, St Clair, and Barrette, of Santa Cruz, were allegedly kidnapped at Marli Street, Woodbrook, at around 4 am on the morning of July 17 and imprisoned at Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley. In the absence of Magistrate Ejenny Espinet, Justice of the Peace  Ramnarine Seunarine presided in the Court. When the matter was called, Lovell and Vincent walked into the Court escorted by their attorney Patrick Godson-Phillips. Godson-Phillips also represents Gibson in the matter. Godson-Phillips and Bonnett’s attorney Ravi Rajcoomar had a brief conversation and agreed on September 9 as an appropriate adjournment date. The JP then agreed to the date and adjourned the matter. Gibson is the only one of the four who was unable to secure the $200,000 bail. He remained in custody up to late yesterday evening. Lovell and Vincent hurriedly left the Court after the matter was heard.

Arrest imminent in Roxanne’s murder

NORTHERN Division police said an arrest is imminent in the murder of 23-year-old Casino worker Roxanne Superville, who was found dead early Thursday morning in a dirt road at La Grine Road, Maracas, St Joseph. Several statements were recorded yesterday by chief investigator, Insp Michael Modeste of the St Joseph Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

There was a shoe lace tied around her neck, and a post mortem performed on Thursday revealed she died as a result of strangulation. Senior police officers said they are working along “systematic lines” and it is believed Superville knew her killer.  She lived at Balata Trace, Maracas, St Joseph, and was employed as a floor attendant at a Port-of-Spain Casino. Clad in olive green skirt suit, Superville was found by Gerard Henry, an employee at the Ministry of Agriculture.  Her murder is the 151st for the year.  Modeste is continuing investigations.

One killed, four injured in Diamond Village car crash

A FAMILY reunion planned for this weekend has been put on hold after Barrackpore labourer, Basdeo Jhagmohan, was killed and four of his relatives injured in a car crash on the M2 Ring Road, Diamond Village, on Thursday evening. Jhagmohan, 49, died instantly in the accident, while those injured have been identified as his mother Mohanie, 68, daughter Marissa, 16, niece Samantha Singh, 16, and his sister Swarswatie Singh, 45. The elderly Mohanie was the most seriously hurt, having suffered major head injuries. Mohanie and Marissa remain warded at San Fernando General Hospital while the other victims were treated and discharged from hospital. Jhagmohan’s parents and two sisters flew in from Guyana and New York, for a family reunion which was planned for tomorrow.

But the celebratory mood was dampened earlier this week when Jhagmohan’s father suffered a stroke and was admitted to the SFGH. Police told Newsday that on Thursday evening, Jhagmohan of Gilbert Trace, was driving his family to the hospital to visit his father when tragedy struck. Police reports indicate that around 5 pm, Jhagmohan lost control of his Ford Laser which veered off the road and crashed into a concrete drain at the roadside. The four passengers in the car were rushed to hospital by Emergency Health Services ambulance, while Jhagmohan was pronounced dead on the scene by a district medical officer.  An autopsy carried out yesterday by Dr Balliram at the San Fernando Mortuary concluded that Jhagmohan’s death was due to asphyxia. Jahgmohan’s wife, Ena, was too distraught to speak when approached by Newsday reporters yesterday at the SFGH. WPC Commissiong of the San Fernando Traffic Branch is investigating.
