Bacchanal at mall as video games seized

Six of Fun City Entertainment’s newest video game machines were seized from its Long Circular Mall branch yesterday. The machines were grabbed from the gaming centre when company officials delayed payment of $20,000 in compensation to dismissed worker, Calvin Beharry. Beharry, a machine operator for ten years at the company, was reportedly dismissed in April 2002 without being given a warning letter or reasons for his dismissal. The matter was taken to the Industrial Court in February, where he was represented by the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW).

Labour relations officer of the union, John Rampersad, said the company was ordered to pay Beharry the $20,000 on or before March 5. He added that the company did not make the payment on the said date and the matter was taken to the High Court where a Writ of Execution to impound the goods was obtained. Yesterday, a Marshall of the High Court served the gaming centre with the Writ which ordered the company to pay Beharry the money or have goods to the tune of $20,000 seized. The money was not paid and, shortly after, machines were  lifted out of the room.
