Ex-con jailed for drug charge

A 27-YEAR-OLD man who was released from prison two weeks ago after serving a three-year sentence for trafficking in cocaine, was yesterday jailed for five years with hard labour after pleading guilty to a similar charge in the Point Fortin Mag-istrates’ Court. Joseph Trimm explained to the court that he sold drugs to support his two children and wife. He was sentenced by Senior Magistrate Herbert Charles in the First Court. The charge was laid by PC Victor.

Court prosecutor Sgt Rohan Pardasie said that around 6 am on Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s La Brea home where they found a plastic bag with 35 rocks of cocaine weighing 15 grammes. The police exercise was supervised by Insp Wells and included Constables Garraway, Murrain and Taitt.

After pleading guilty Trimm pleaded for leniency saying he was unemployed and used the proceeds from selling drugs to maintain his wife and their two children. However, the magistrate admonished Tri-mm for returning to his old habits and also noted that only two weeks ago, Trimm was released from prison after serving time for a similar offence. “Apparently you have not learned your lesson,” Magistrate Charles told Trimm as the custodial sentence was imposed.
