Explosion rocks ALNG plant
A loud resounding explosion on the compound of the Atlantic LNG plant in Point Fortin yesterday forced several workers to scamper off the compound. According to reports, the explosion of a turbine occurred around 3.15 pm yesterday. Ernest Thompson, who led the group of protesting ALNG workers two months ago and was also outside the compound at the time, said: “It (explosion) rocked the place, it shook the entire place. It could have been worse, but it’s something internal.”
The compressor and turbine, he said, is operated from a control room. No injuries were reported in the explosion but some workers were said to be “shaken up” after the incident. Up to late yesterday the cause of the explosion was not identified. Members of the maintenance crew of ALNG reportedly went on the compound shortly afterwards to access the situation. Attempts to reach ALNG officials were unsuccessful.
