Belmont man in court for murder, kidnapping

A BELMONT man yesterday made two separate appearances before two Port-of-Spain magistrates to answer to charges of the murder of a 68-year-old businessman and the kidnapping of a 71-year-old businessman. Shortly after 2 pm, Rudy Nelson, of Boisserre Road in Belmont, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Eighth Court charged with the December 2, 2003 murder of Christopher Aleong. Aleong, the brother of former BWIA CEO Conrad Aleong and Magistrate Sonia Aleong, was shot dead while driving his car out of his Petit Valley home. Nelson was charged by Sgt Stephen Ramsubhag of the Four Roads CID and has not yet retained legal counsel.

Nelson, along with three other men, had hours earlier appeared before Magistrate Gillian David at the First Court charged with the kidnapping of Belmont businessman Alvin Nunes. Nunes was abducted from his gas station at the corner of Reid Lane and Belmont Circular Road on June 6. He was rescued from a house in Diego Martin two days later. Nelson and one of the men, Inglebert Benn, of Crown Trace, Enterprise, Chaguanas were jointly charged with unlawfully taking away the body of Nunes. The other two, Sherwin Carter and Sheldon Bailey, both of Blue Basin Road in Diego Martin, were jointly charged with falsely imprisoning Nunes between June 6 and 8 at a house in Diego Martin. The indictable charges were laid by PC Mickey Williams of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

David granted Nelson and Benn bail in the sum of $100,000 each and they were ordered to visit the Besson Street and Chaguanas police stations respectively every Saturday at 6 pm. Records of the visits are to be made. Bailey and Carter were each granted bail in the sum $85,000 and were ordered to visit the West End Police Station every Saturday at 6 pm. Their visits are also expected to be recorded. All four men will re-appear before Magistrate David on June 25. Nelson will re-appear before Mc Nicolls on June 22.
