Roti shop owner shot in the mouth
A 59-year-old roti shop owner was shot in the mouth and chest by a lone gunman who attempted to rob him of cash and jewelry. Reports revealed that around 4.20 am yesterday, Oudit Ramlogan was in his roti shop at Brathwaite Street in Tunapuna with his wife Devika, when they were confronted by a man armed with a gun with a jersey pulled over his face. The gunman aimed the weapon at Devika and ordered her to hand over cash and jewelry. She resisted and her husband ran to her assistance. The gunman became enraged and fired two shots, striking Ramlogan in the mouth and on the right side of his chest, before fleeing the scene empty-handed.
A report was made to the Tunapuna Police Station and Insp Modeste, acting Insp Johnny Abraham, Cpls Francis and Seecharan went to the scene and the injured Ramlogan was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he was treated and warded. Relatives told Newsday that Ramlogan is in critical but stable condition and that surgery will be carried out today to remove the bullets. The relatives added that because of the rampant increase in crime at Brathwaite Street, they are now seriously contemplating closing the business. Officers of the Tunapuna Police Station confirmed that crime has increased in Tunapuna, but they added that patrols have also increased in a bid to deal with the situation.
