Maha Sabha: We are Trinis first

DECLARING that no political party could influence its thinking on issues of national importance, Maha Sabha Secretary General Sat Maharaj said it was critical that all citizens participate in discussions on the Police Reform Bills and how to address crime in Trinidad and Tobago. Addressing a public forum on the Bills in St Augustine on Wednesday, Maharaj declared: “The Maha Sabha is beyond the control of anyone. The Office of Prime Minister must be respected, regardless of the holder.” Maha Sabha president general Thirbawhon Seegobin lamented that Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday could not be present to address a similar forum scheduled for Tuesday and which was subsequently cancelled. Prime Minister Patrick Manning advanced Government’s position on the Bills which will be debated in Parliament on Tuesday and fielded questions on matters pertaining to the legislation. Visiting Indian holy seer, the Shankarcharia, urged the Government to leave no stone unturned in the war against crime and its efforts to restore peace and security to TT.
