Woodbrook residents move against commercial activity

WOODBROOK residents petitioned the Port-of-Spain Corporation yesterday to take active steps to bring the area back to its glory days. The residents made it clear in their petition, aired at the Statutory meeting of the Council that there was too much commercial activity in Woodbrook. The petition stressed that the noise and emissions from commercial activity in designated residential areas denied the residents peaceful enjoyment of their properties. “The proliferation of restaurants, small, medium and large, have created a health hazard with the existence of rats, roaches and ants in Woodbrook, with an absence of proper sanitation in many cases, the residents contended.

They want the Port-of-Spain Corporation to ensure that all places where food and drinks are sold are made to maintain proper sanitation standards or face closure. Signed by hundreds of residents, the petition was presented on their behalf by one of their Councillors, Cynthia Piper. A call has also been made for the Woodbrook Police Station to return to its former position, that of serving the needs of Woodbrook residents. Mayor Murchison Brown conceded the violations of peoples’ rights in Woodbrook and promised that the petition would be considered by the various committees of the Council. He noted that there was too much lawlessness in Woodbrook and related areas.
