Third suspect held in Vijay kidnap

A third suspect is now in police custody and being questioned in connection with the kidnapping of ten-year-old Vijay Persad. Meanwhile, South Eastern police officers are said to be making spot checks throughout the Moruga district, both  in forested and residential areas as the search for the kidnapped boy intensified. Newsday understands that the third person, said to be in his 30s, was detained on Thursday. Persad was kidnapped 27 days ago while closing the doors to his father’s small business place at Moruga Road, Indian Walk, Princes Town.

Persad’s father, Rajkumar, reportedly refused to open the burglar-proofed gate to his cash register to  three armed men who then snatched Persad and escaped on foot through some nearby bushes. Police sources told Newsday yesterday that investigating officers strongly believe that the search should be concentrated in the residential areas of Moruga in addition to the forested areas. They have decided not to maintain a routine search party and exercise on a daily basis but to have spontaneous searches in order to maintain the element of surprise. Investigations are continuing.
