Woman raped, brothers critical after crash

A 28-year-old woman was raped twice and robbed of cash and jewelry, after which her two brothers were both warded in critical condition at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) after crashing into a lamppost. According to police sources, the woman was walking along the Old Southern Main Road in  Carapichaima around 2 am yesterday, when a man driving a white Hyundai Accent accosted her. She was forced into the vehicle and taken to a lonely area in Buccarro, where he proceeded to rape her twice, before robbing her of her two gold chains valued at $2,000, and $180 in cash.

The man then sped off, leaving her stranded by the roadside after threatening to kill her if she reported the matter to the police. The woman then made her way to the Couva Police Station where she lodged an official report and was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility. She was medically examined and it was confirmed by the District Medical Officer that she had been sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, her two brothers went to the Couva Police Station on hearing of what had happened to their sister.

After leaving the station, they were reportedly on the way to the Chaguanas Health Facility to visit the woman, when they lost control of their vehicle which crashed into a lamp-post on the Old Southern Main Road, Mc Bean stretch in Couva. Both men were taken to the SFGH via EHS ambulance, where they were warded in critical condition. PCs Rhadikissoon, Abbay and Singh of the Couva Police Station are continuing investigations.
