Two shot dead by police at Morvant ‘Lookout’

TWO San Juan men are dead and police are looking for a third man believed injured after a shoot-out at the Lady Young “Lookout” Morvant yesterday evening. Roger Raphael, 31, and his nephew Kano Raphael, 35, of Akal Trace, Maitigual Road, San Juan were both pronounced dead on arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. According to investigators, on receiving information around 3.30 pm, officers of the Crime Suppression Unit intercepted a blue Honda Civic car with three  men on the Lady Young Road, Morvant in the vicinity of the “Lookout.” With their suspicions aroused, the cops ordered them out of the car.

Instead, the men greeted the officers with gunshots and the officers returned fire. When the shooting was over the two Raphaels lay dead, while a third man escaped. Police believed he was also shot. Police seized a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9 millimetre pistol and several rounds of ammunition from the car. The men were rushed to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The Raphaels had a checkered history and are believed to have been on their way to a  robbery when they were stopped. Belmont police are investigating.
