Tobago trio on $.7M bail for robbery
Three Tobago young men were yesterday placed on bail totalling close to $.7 million when they reappeared in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on charges arising out of an incident in which several visitors were robbed, and one of them, a Venezuelan, was chopped at a guest house in Lowlands on August 12. Darren Romeo, 18, Nigel Romeo, 22, and Simon Sandy, 23, all of Mt Pleasant, were each placed on $150,000 bail with two sureties to be approved by the Clerk of The Peace, on four counts of robbery with violence. They were also each placed on $60,000 bail with a surety to be approved by the Clerk of The Peace, on a charge of burglary and two charges of house-breaking. Charges were laid by Detective PC Earl Arthur of Old Grange police.
The three were remanded in custody when they appeared before Magistrate Joan Connor in the Scarborough First Court last week. They are charged with robbing the visitors of a watch, jewelry, US and local currency at the guest house at which they were staying at Lowlands in Tobago’s west end around 1.15 am. The security guard at the establishment was reportedly overpowered and the visitors robbed in their apartment by three armed men, who then allegedly broke into a bar on the premises and stole some $800 worth of liquor. The Venezuelan, Mathias Sovotta, was allegedly chopped during the robbery.
Meanwhile, Nigel Romeo was also granted $30,000 bail with a surety to be approved by the Clerk of The Peace when he appeared yesterday on a separate additional charge of breaking into Frank Lawrence’s home at Shirvan Road, near Lowlands, on August 3 and stealing a Jamaican machete and a bottle of rum, together valued at $160. Nigel was also charged in this matter by Detective Earl Arthur. The trio will reappear in court on all matters on September 2.
