BIGWU supports Sahadeo

The Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU) yesterday sided with line minister Christine Sahadeo over the resignation of FCB chairman Ken Gordon, saying in all State-owned and State-controlled enterprises, the line ministry was responsible for establishing policy guidelines. Given that the Board is appointed by the State, it is an obvious requirement for such Boards to work along with the line minister, BIGWU president, Vincent Cabrera, said in a press statement.

“Chairmen come and chairmen go,” the union said, noting that it had no evidence to substantiate Gordon’s claim and wondered why other members of the Board had not taken up a similar position to Gordon. The government should proceed to reconstitute the Board of the bank to include genuine stakeholder interest, the union said, describing the present board as  heavily biased towards the private sector. The union said that absolutely no communication had taken place between the union and the board during Gordon’s tenure as chairman.
