Take care with those colours and braids

FANTASY hair colours have become very popular for Carnival. These include light blue, lime green, vibrant reds, not to mention purple and pink. To achieve these colours, it is necessary to perform pre-lightening of the hair shaft. As you are aware, lightening the hair, strip or robs the hair of its natural moisture and causes the hair to look dull and feel dry.

If your choice is to have one of these “Carnival hair colours,” you should have it done by a professional to ensure that there is no damage to your hair, since it involves the use of peroxide. In addition, the long periods of exposure to the sun on Carnival days can scorch the hair leaving it lifeless. The use of a moisturiser containing UV protection is recommended. This type of hair fashion is best suited for women with strong resilient hair. It allows the versatility of changing to a darker hair colour after Carnival, if desired. As previously discussed, hair weaving is an option for others who may wish to enjoy the “Carnival colours” but whose hair may not be as resilient. You can have any colour weaved on to your natural hair and have it removed just as easily. I know that you will enjoy it.

Now let me introduce one of my trichologist colleagues, Ingrid Gormandy. She will share with you some information on the care and maintenance of braids. “Today’s trend in natural hair includes cork-screw, or braids with extension or hair that is locked (dreadlocks). Again because of Carnival and the many events to attend,  a lot of people also wear braids because of low maintenance. Well I have news for you, these styles require just as much care and attention as chemically treated hair or weaves. Some people have fears about receding hair lines which is associated with braiding this can be eliminated.

Here are some tips for clients who choose to wear their hair cork screwed or braid with extensions:
*When extensions are being placed in the hair, place your finger to the top of plaits to prevent tension on scalp. Tight braids can cause “Traction Alopecia”, follicles (infected follicles) also scaly scalp.
*Keep scalp and hair moist. This prevents breakage when removing extensions.
*When removing extensions: Take out a few plaits, gently comb out hair from the ends and gradually move towards the roots. Plait or twist the comb out section of hair and continue in the same manner until all braids are removed. Again this prevents breakage.
