Goring second TT b-baller in WNBA

This came about after Gillian Goring was drafted in the third round by the Washington Mystics.

And the lanky 6 foot- 7 inches centre was handed the No 55 jersey and a spot on the 12-member Mystics roster by coach Richie Adubato.

Goring was selected in the third round, 32nd overall in the April 4 draft coming out of North Carolina State after attending Germantown Academy.

The 24-year-old ex-Wolfpack as NC State are nicknamed, follows another Trinidadian Pietra Gay who was a member of the New York Liberty during the third season of the WNBA.

When the Washington Mystics reduced their roster to 12 players they decided to go with 6-7 Goring, instead of 6-3 Teana Miller.

General Manager Linda Hargrove said Goring is “young,” and at 6-6, 6-7, she’s such a presence. Her upside is too great.”

Two other players were released by the Mystics, Megan Vogel and Rita Williams.

The decision as to which three players to cut did not come easily, Mystics GM Hargrove explained.

Meanwhile, Tiffany Williams became Tobago’s first ever professional female basketball player. Her present professional team, Romania based Alexandra Telephon copped the final play-off berth for the Big Eight in the Division “A” of the Romania Euro FIBA Professional Basketball League.

However, in their quarter-final they matched up against the number one team Trigovisa and was knocked out.

The 23-year-old standout averaged 13 points 16 rebounds and two block shots per game for her team.

But Williams most likely will be displaying her wares for her former club, Hill Bouncers, in the Tobago Zonal Basketball Commission 2007 season.

The 6’ 7’’ centre who attended Roxborough Composite School returned home for a short break.

She has been guaranteed selection for the national team that is schedule to compete in the Caricom Championships next month by coach Jackson Charles once she is available.
