The Pompek
Pekingese originated in China, where they have been described in literature for over a thousand years. They were first brought to the west in 1860. They are easily recognised by their flat faces, thick soft fur and “chrysanthemum” tails, that curl over their backs.
Pekingese are extraordinarily long-lived and frequently live to 14 or 15-years-old.
Pomeranians originated in Germany. They are actually a miniaturised version of the German Spitz. In their minds, they are still the larger breed and will challenge other dogs of any size. They also make noisy watchdogs.
Crossing these two breeds has produced dogs with pretty, soft coats that are brave, noisy, long-term companions, who need a good deal of grooming to keep them in peak condition. Some of them inherit the flat face of the Pekingese, while others have the sharper nose of the Pomeranian. Interestingly, this cross often results in an animal that can be mistaken for a Tibetan Spaniel: a recognised breed that may not actually be from Tibet and is not really a spaniel!
Whatever your little dog looks like, value him for who he is: your friend, your guard dog and your responsibility.
