Golden voiced Patrice Roberts
She has established herself as a leading draw at major events in New York City, Miami, Toronto and London and throughout the Caribbean Diaspora performing most recently at Jamaica’s Sum Fest where she teamed up with Makka Diamond to wow the huge crowd in attendance.
In 2001, Patrice copped the National Junior Calypso monarch, National Junior Soca monarch and National Library calypso monarch, which earned her a chance to perform at the Junior Carnival in Miami.
She came to national attention in 2005 with the collaboration “The Islands” alongside cousin Bunji Garlin, which was used in promotional commercials by the Ministry of Tourism.
As a songwriter she has penned “Sugar Boy” which became an instant hit and showcased her ‘isolation’ dancing talent in the video.
The soca star is blessed with a distinctive voice which has propelled her to many other titles from an early age, the most prominent being her greatest achievement so far, winning the 2006 Road March competition with the song “Band of the Year” sung with Machel Montano.
Her much anticipated CD entitled Patrice Roberts Looking Hot is now available.
1 Who were the people who have influenced you the most in singing?
My mom and the late Beulah Bob influenced me the most at the beginning and since then it’s been Machel Montano, Kernal Roberts and Destra Garcia.
2 As an entertainer which would you rate as your most memorable and satisfying performance?
My most memorable and satisfying performances so far have been performing in Europe, Madison Square Garden and Six Flags in New Jersey.
3 Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born at Mount Hope Hospital and grew up in Toco.
4 If you had to perform for an audience who has never heard or seen you before and had only one song to perform, which would you? And if you had to perform one other song from a Trinbagonian artiste which would it be?
I would perform “Rollin’” for an audience who has never heard my music or seen me perform.
One song to perform from a Trinbagonian artiste would be “Oil & Music” by Machel Montano and David Rudder.
5 At what schools/institutions did you receive your education?
I attended Toco AC School and Toco Composite Secondary School
6 Your favourite meal or dish/food, and drink?
My favourite meal or dish is macaroni pie, baked chicken, potato salad, fried rice and drink is fruit punch.
7 What is your greatest fear in life?
My greatest fear in life is losing my mom because she is the most important person in my life.
8 What are your greatest accomplishments, musically and otherwise?
My greatest accomplishments musically is winning the Road-March title in 2006, with Machel, and being the youngest female artiste to do so.
9 What would be the most perfect day?
The most perfect day for me is when I’m performing and just being around.
10 What is your most prized possession, tangible and intangible?
My most prized tangible possession is my 2006 Road March title; and my most prized intangible possession is the use of my voice, a blessing from God.
11 What was it like growing up in your family?
Growing up in my family was really interesting because I grew up in a very religious family and I actually grew up the hard way in the sense that I had to learn to be independent from a tender age.
12 Your pet peeve? Your favourite form of relaxation?
My pet peeve is bad attitude towards life. My favourite form of relaxation is sleeping.
13 If you could dine with anyone in history who would that be?
If I could dine with anyone in history it would definitely be Nelson Mandela.
14 If you had to solve the ills that prevail in TT what would you do?
If I had to solve the ills in TT — education and provide more jobs.
15 If you could hire any singer and/or band to perform in your living room, who would you choose?
I would hire Beyonc? Knowles.
16 What advice/recipe for success would you give to young people coming into the business?
Keep trying because success comes with a lot of hard work, believe in God, believe in yourself, the sky is the limit.
17 What is there about you that you would like our readers to know (ie that they may not know already)?
I would like readers to know that I’m a simple country girl.
18 What is your favourite pastime/interest/hobby outside of performing?
My favourite pastime is spending time with family and close friends.
19 What daily (and/or in general) motto do you live by?
The general motto I live by “The Sky is the Limit”.
20 What are your favourite calypso and soca songs?
My favourite calypso is “One Day” by Natasha Wilson. My favourite soca song is “Out on the Road” by Zan.
