St Augustine tennis 108 years old

Club president Anthony Sampath, revealed that the organisation is celebrating its 108th anniversary noting that it remains one of the oldest running tennis clubs in the country.

He pledged his commitment to the organisation in maintaining its success for another 100 years.

Sampath noted that his vision for the club is to focus on youths and their development. He explained that he will continue its projects designed to nurturing the young talents locally with coach Kenny Boodoosingh remaining at the helm.

“We have produced some of the top local players who now ply their trade on the US circuit,” he said. National Singles champion Carlista Mohammed and 2007 Tennis TT Sportswoman of the Year Olivia Bennett all graced the courts of the St Augustine Tennis Club while honing their skills. The tennis club hosted the 2008 Sagicor Junior Tennis Tournament in September earlier this year with top seed Nalini Maharaj beating Jazz Morgan in the Girls Under-16 Singles final.

Maharaj, a St Augustine Tennis Club member, was previously seeded first in the Under-14 category and has made a successful transition in the older division.

On Saturday, Maharaj was awarded the Most Improved Junior Player for her success at the Sagicor tournament. Ravi Ramsingh received a prize for winning the Men’s “A” Division while Naveen Rattan finished runner-up in the category. Max Cheekes received the award for Most Improved Senior Player while Truman Rajack was the Most Dedicated Player/Member.

Ria Siewsarran-Phillip was named Member of the Year and also walked away with the trophy for first place in the Women’s Singles class.

The chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco region was on hand to extend best wishes to the club and promised to assist in anyway possible in the improvement of the club.
