Dad to stand trial for murder
Jason Wendell Williams stood silently in the prisoners’ docks at the Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrate’s Court, as chief magistrate Sherman McNicolls informed him that the State prosecution had presented sufficient evidence for the formation of a prima facie case.
Attorney Akilah Phillip represented the State while Williams has been represented by two different attorneys since his matter began on June 5, last. Initially attorney Shawn Fulchan acted as William’s counsel, however Fulchan was later replaced by defence attorney Richard Clarke- Wills.
When the matter was first called, McNicolls initially stood the matter down because he was awaiting Clarke-Wills’ arrival.
The attorney had previously informed the magistrate, at the end of the prosecution’s case, that he wanted to address certain issues before the court which he believed to be relevant to William’s defence.
When the matter was recalled, Clarke-Wills still could not be found, and the magistrate proceeded without him.
Williams was ordered to be remanded into custody until his next court appearance before a judge in the High Court.
On November 24, 2007, William’s daughter Latricia Jack was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by Williams, because he claimed she had fallen down a flight of stairs. However, doctors notified police when they examined the child and found several marks of violence, including what appeared to be bite marks, about her body.
The infant was later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mt Hope where she succumbed to her injuries and died.
