Sporting activities for St Peter’s Day festival

The two-day festival gets underway at Salybia, August 18-19 and will feature other beach activities.

Among them are swimming for junior and senior competitors, tug-of-war, greasy pole climbing and seven-a-side football for both juniors and seniors.

There will also be beach volleyball, kayaking and other water sports to be contested over the two-day period.

In addition to the sporting events, there will also be social, cultural and educational gains to be derive from the activities.

The community feels a sense of pride as being the host community for this auspicious event.

Donations and hampers will be distributed to families who are less fortunate and special awards and recognition will be given to fishermen in the community who have contributed positively to the development of Fishing along the Northeast Coast.

Culturally, the community can continue the traditions of the fish festival in more meaningful ways and Salybia will create history as being the first community to host the inaugural event.

Educationally, the committee proposes to create avenues for fishing workshops and developmental programmes in the area, especially among young people. Competitions and visits to the schools in the area by the committee will ensure that students understand the meaning of the celebrations.

They will be able at the end of the festival to show an appreciation for the St Peter’s Day as they will understand why it is celebrated.
