Tribe Aqua-Holics dominate dragon boat event in Tobago

In only its second year the Tobago Dragon Boat event has all the potential to be a major attraction on the island as the crowd this year was massive. It may have been the reason why the Secretary of the Division of Tourism and Transportation in the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Oswald Williams announced plans to include international teams in the future.

The event is also on the international calendar of Dragon Boat Racing. The two days event saw a total of nine (9) Tobago teams and fourteen (14) from Trinidad and Tobago competing in various categories including schools girls and boys teams, mixed schools teams, males, females and a Tobago race.

It was witnessed by Ambassador Yang Yao Ming and Franco Siu Chong - Commissioner of the International Dragon Boat Federation. Participants competed in the events using the three ten-paddlers boats which were recently purchased by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

Tobago team were expected to hold the advantage over their Trinidadian counterpart but that did not happen, as teams in the sister isle found themselves playing catch-up.

Trinidad boats showed their experience in the event as they took the advantage and maintaned it to the finish.

The performance of the Tobago boats means that a lot of work will be needed if the local competitors are to contest international events as well as if international boats are to come here to compete.

Male Team Final B: 1- Vikings, 2- Shock Wave, 3- Fire Service Jet Reaction. Female Team Final A: 1- Tribe Aqua- Holics, 2- Vikings, 3- Angel & Saints. Female Team Final B: 1- Invest TT Oarstruck, 2- Titans, 3- Shock Wave
