Interview with Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene: Thank you. I am pleased to tell my story to anyone who would like to hear it. I have often been called “Mary of Magdala” because I came from Magdala — a small town sometimes referred to as Dalmuntha, which is between Capernaum and Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee. There were other towns near its shores such as Bethsaida, Chorazin and Gadara.

Interviewer: Now, Luke wrote in his gospel that, “Jesus travelled through towns and villages preaching the Good News about the Kingdom of God. The twelve disciples went with him, and some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases.” Can you tell us more about this?

Mary Magdalene: Yes, One night Jesus went out to the mountains to pray. He spent the whole night praying to God. In the morning he called his disciples and chose twelve whom he named apostles. At that time, rabbis had only male followers but Jesus had both men and women. In my case, Jesus drove out seven devils that dwelt inside of me. Afterwards, I became a new woman and followed my Saviour every step of the way.

“Among his other female disciples were Joanna, whose husband Chuza was an officer in Herod Antipas’ court; Mary the mother of James, the younger and Joseph or Jones, Susanna and Salome. We women followed Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem and used our own resources to help him and his apostles. And all this is recorded in the gospels of Mark and Luke who was a doctor.

Interviewer: That’s right. They also stated that the woman who came with Jesus from Galilee witnessed the Crucifixion and “followed after and beheld the sepulchre, and how the body was laid. And returned, and prepared spices and ointment; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandments.” The gospellers went on to say the women, including yourself, saw the tomb was empty and the angels said that Jesus Christ was risen from the dead. Please tell us more.

Mary Magdalene: I was the first Jesus appeared to after his resurrection. I saw him and mistook him for the gardener but when he called my name I realised that it was he. Shortly after, the other Mary came on the scene and we held on to his feet and worshipped him. Then we women went to the apostles and told them everything we had seen. Peter ran off and John followed right away. John arrived at the tomb before Peter but waited for Peter who entered immediately.

“Later on, Jesus appeared to Peter, then to the apostles when Thomas was absent. When Thomas was told, he doubted saying he would not believe until he himself had put his hand in the wounds. Suddenly, Jesus came in and told Thomas to do just that. Thomas believed and cried out. “My Lord and my God.” Jesus was seen by James who was beheaded by Herod. He became first among Jesus’ chosen apostles to be martyred.

“Two disciples saw Jesus as they walked on the Emmaus Road. And John recorded that Jesus appeared to some of the apostles on the shores of the Sea of Galilee and he ate with them. Then, more than five hundred saw him at the time of his Ascension. Well, that’s my testimony.
