Housing Ministry helping citizens

A release stated that in the ministry’s Year In Review 2012 Report, it highlighted the benefits citizens received throughout the year through its various divisions and agencies. One of the highlights of the ministry’s achievements was through Home Improvement Grants. Citizens benefited from these grants under the Housing Policy Facilitation and Implementation Unit (HPFIU). “A sum of up to $15,000 was given to eligible applicants to conduct home repairs,” the release said. Another key area that citizens benefited from was under the Programme Monitoring and Coordination Unit (PMU), where citizens accessed Home Improvement/Home Purchase Subsidies and New Home Construction Subsidies.

Over the last two years, the PMU provided financial assistance to 1,241 families for home repairs, 595 of these beneficiaries were women.

Under the Land Settlement Agency (LSA) which has the responsibility “to transform and develop squatting sites into sustainable communities and to bring relief to the landless,” a total of 382 Certificates of Comfort were handed out. Under the “Land for the Landless” Programme, citizens have the opportunity to design and construct their own homes.

Some 500 applicants were successfully chosen in the first lottery distribution of 500 lots of land in May 2013.
