Bovell III splashes to Berlin bronze
This is the third medal gained by the 30-year-old Trinidad and Tobago swimmer in this year’s World Cup competition, having got a gold (men 100m IM) and bronze (men 50m freestyle) in the first leg at Eindhoven, Netherlands.
Facing the starter in lane five, Bovell touched the wall in 51.65 seconds, trailing Russia’s Vladimir Morozov (51.13) and Australia’s Kenneth To (51.21).
Completing the field were Germany’s Markus Deibler (52.47), Australia’s Daniel Tranter (52.65), South Africa’s Darian Townsend (52.91), Germany’s Dimitri Colupaev (52.99) and Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima (53.25).
Earlier, in the first round, Bovell won heat three in 52.90, ahead of Colupaev (53.15) and Deibler (53.34).
On his Twitter account yesterday, Bovell wrote, “bagged the bronze in the 100m, 5 (seconds) slower than three days ago. Didn’t have the easy speed. Ten hour trip (from the Netherlands on Friday) must have affected me.”
Today, Bovell is listed to participate in heat four (out of five heats) of the 50 freestyle first round. He has been drawn in lane four, along with Kitajima (lane one), Roman Kucik of Slovakia (two), Jasper Van Merlo of the Netherlands (three), Ari Pekka Liukkonen of Finland (five), Erik Van Dooren of Switzerland (six), Tom Siara of Germany (seven) and Joel Greenshields of Canada (eight).
