Kashi Vishwanath Mandir win at Swaha Sports
As a result the Rock Road Penal based unit beat Sukh Shanti Bhakti Mandali, St Augustine and Om Shakti, Aranjuez, who tied for second place by just four points behind the winners, to lift the coveted Shankaracharya Pundit Hari Persad challenge trophy.
Defending champions SWAHA Hindu College from Sangre Grande finished 13 points behind the new champions in fourth position. In the keenly contested march past parade Tulsi Manas Mandir of Coalmine Road Sangre Grande scored the beaver trick with a dazzling and well rehearsed performance to once again take the Mataji Chandrawati Persad challenge trophy back to the north east region.
SWAHA Hindu College finished as first runners up while Gyaan Deepak Kirtan Mandali, Aranjuez had to settle for third place. In the march past queen category Arti Dowtal of Gyaan Jyoti Mandir of Madras Village St Helena, clad in a well decorated and colourful sari and moving with precision to the sounds of the Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Band was a clear cut winner.
Vashti Nandlal, Om Shakti and Melissa Siew of Divya Ashram, Preysal were second and third respectively. In the Girls under 15 100 metres sprint event Karmasha Rojas easily beat the rest of the field while Joshua Grant made it a double for SWAHA Hindu College in the boy’s category.
In the over 15 division Ishmael Haqq of Om Shakti made light work of his male counterparts while Kerise Gibson of SWAHA Hindu College collected the gold medal in the girl’s event. The tug of war once again had the large crowd on the edge of their seats as SWAHA branches from throughout the country battled for supremacy among their male and female counterparts.
In the end the Tulsi Manas team overpowered the men from Om Shakti to take away the trophy and gold medals and bragging rights for the rest of the year.
In the women’s final Gyaan Jyoti proved to be too much for the women from Sukh Shanti to claim the first prize. In his welcome address the Paramacharya of SWAHA Pundit Hardeo Persad told the large gathering that his organisation will continue to use the medium of sports to assist in the all round development of its membership. The Paramacharya also showered accolades and God’s blessing unto the members of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services for volunteering their services free of charge on an annual basis to conduct the day’s activities. Member of Parliament for Couva South Honourable Rudy Indarsing was on hand to take the march past salute.
During his address to declare the sports day officially open Indarsingh commended SWAHA for the tremendous job they have been doing not only for spreading the gospel of the Hindu Religion but also for placing a lot of emphasis on sports, culture and education.
He stated that other religious organisations should emulate the efforts that SWAHA is making to assist in the holistic development of its members which he said would redound to the benefit of the country at large.
