Do you devote enough time to your skin?

In an ideal world we all want to look our best but I know it happens – our lifestyles have become so hectic that it takes immense effort to put aside the time to the beauty rituals and we tend to forget to do or even choose not to do the basics and then it becomes a habit and our skin suffers as a result.

One of the major problems that can occur with irregular skin care is that slowly but surely, there will be dead skin cells building on top of the outer skin’s layer thereby preventing any type of penetration of topical products. Once a skin care routine is absent, make-up application can become difficult and if not applied with additional care, can look heavy and cakey since the skin is not smooth and flat. Furthermore, the make-up will not last for the duration of the event and you will fall into the trap of consistently re-applying too much make-up, thus worsening the effect.

However, this can be avoided if you apply some of my dos and don’ts which can start to improve the skin’s overall look and feel from today and leading up to the big day or to any event.

Dos:

* Understand Your Skin: This step will probably take the longest but it will definitely be the most rewarding since you cannot choose the right products without knowing what your skin responds to with positive results. An aesthetician or cosmetologist is equipped to help you as they will take the guesswork out of the products that you will need.

Tip: to speed things along, pay attention to what your skin does during the day whether it shines or if it feels tight after washing it as this information is critical to the professional.

* Choose the right products: After you’ve had that discussion and you have identified your skin type – whether oil, combination, acne-prone, dry etc, you can now select the products that will be gentle and made for your skin.

* Create that habit: Yes it’s necessary, once you have your personal products, here you need to ensure that you cleanse twice a day, tone at least once a day and moisturise at least twice a day (depending on skin type)

* Increase your water intake/review personal diet: It sounds clich?d but this actually works and I can personally attest to it.

I’ve noticed that I increase my water intake and slightly reduce the oily foods, my skin responds and it reduces the amount of oil that appears on my face and my makeup stays beautifully for the entire day and of course it benefits my entire body as well.

Don’ts

* The Most Important Don’t: do not Self Diagnose when choosing products as you can unknowingly worsen the situation by using the incorrect one. This happens frequently.

* Do not scrub everyday as there is such a thing as too much exfoliation.

This can strip the skin unnecessarily of the required oils to keep the skin soft and pliable.

* Do not apply your moisturiser in a downward motion.

* Do not leave out the neckline, it’s part of the face.

* Do not use toners with alcohol everyday as they can also strip the face
