Accident victim recovering
On Father’s Day (Sunday last) Garcia was at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) where Teenisha, an Upper Six Form student of St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando has been warded since last week.
Teenisha sustained injuries to her pelvis in the crash which claimed the lives of her close friends and schoolmates twin sisters Khadijah and Khertima Taylor, 18, and UWI student Kafiya Gill, 19. The four girls were all back-seat passengers in the Mazda 3 driven by friend David Balkissoon who sustained a fractured spine and remains warded at Augustus Long Hospital, Pointe-a-Pierre.
Front-seat passenger Akinton Derrick, 21, who was also injured is recovering from injuries to his leg, arms and ribs at SFGH. Garcia told Newsday his daughter continues to “recover nicely.”
Because of her serious injuries, Teenisha was unable to bid goodbye to her friends who were buried on Friday and Saturday. She however sent her condolences through letters that were read out at the funeral services.
Garcia said it has been an emotional time for his daughter. “Not being there (at the funerals) definitely had an effect on her, but we are here for her. For me her life is the best gift any father would have,” Garcia said. Derrick’s father told Newsday that he too is “progressing well.” Investigations are continuing into the accident.
