Cyclist Alexander qualifies for W/Cup

After his recent string of performances on the regional and international stages, Alexander successfully qualified for the Men’s 1km Time Trial event. According to the latest UCI track rankings which were updated yesterday, the DPS athlete presently sits in 56th position on 54 points.

The required amount of UCI points needed to qualify for the World Cup 1Km Time Trial event is 30, Alexander surpassing this by 26pts. The robust rider also climbed significantly further up the rankings from a distant 74 into position 38, amassing an overall total of 96pts.

On July 1, national endurance rider Varun Maharaj was the first local rider to seal a spot in the World Cup. He qualified for the Men’s Scratch Race after amassing 74pts, well over the requisite 30pts. Additionally, Maharaj’s recent Scratch performances saw him jump from position 74 into 52. After his credible silver medal showing in the Men’s Omnium at the US Grand Prix of Sprinting over the weekend, Maharaj also climbed into position number 19 on the UCI’s Omnium rankings. His previous rank stood at 48 and is currently on 120pts. Countryman Jovian Gomez is the latest TT addition to these rankings, in position number 60 on 66pts. The top 24 in the world will qualify for the World Cup.

Youngster Kwesi Browne also had a major increase in his Men’s Keirin track rankings, jumping from a distant 217 to position 81. He has so far attained 88pts in this event. Olympian, Njisane Phillip currently leads the TT athletes in this division. He is ranked at 67 on 97pts. Trailing nationals are the DPS trio of Justin Roberts (144/ 40pts); Alexander (182/ 30pts); Haseen McLean (193/ 28pts) and Azikiwe Kellar (322/ 3pts). The top 36 cyclists in the world will qualify for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, this nation’s top track sprinter Phillip, is currently ranked at a far 80 on 86pts. Fellow nationals in this category are Browne (112/ 55pts); Alexander (129/ 44pts); Roberts (284/ 6pts); McLean (286/ 6pts) and Kellar (307/ 4pts). Only the top 45 riders will advance to the World Cup.

These TT riders were able to secure these spots and UCI points by competing in several international meets. Over the past two months, they have participated in cycling events UCI grand Prix events in Beijing, China; Pennsylvania and Colorado, USA; and Cottbus, Germany.

For those who are yet to attain World Cup places, they will have up until September 1 to qualify in the respective disciplines.
