Two accused cops expecting babies

It is expected that warrants for the arrests of Police Constables Gary Moore and Suad Weeks will be issued today. Acting Police Commissioner, Trevor Paul, said earlier this week that warrants for the two officers would be issued soon, but word reaching Newsday is that the two officers would be served warrants for their arrest sometime today. The two police constables were ordered by Chief Magistrate, Sherman Mc Nicolls on March 24, to be charged with the unlawful killing of Phillip Seerattan at the International School on November 20, 2002. Weeks, who is pregnant, is close to the end of her second trimester. After the ruling by Chief Magistrate, Sherman Mc Nicolls, Weeks was hospitalised a few days later.

According to sources, she began experiencing complications with her pregnancy and as a result, has been confined to absolute bed rest. The common-law wife of the other officer facing charges, Constable Gary Moore, is also due to have a baby any day soon. Seerattan, 17, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with the officers at the Westmoorings school. He had earlier entered the school’s compound armed with his father’s gun and shot a security guard. Since the ruling by the Chief Magistrate, no warrants were immediately issued on the day he ruled that both officers used “excessive force” in attempting to detain the “disturbed young man.” Both officers were allowed to walk freely out of the St Vincent Street courthouse. The services of attorney Dana Seetahal have been retained by the Police Association. She is expected to represent the two officers.
