Teens plunge to death in river

THREE teenagers soared 129 feet across a river mouth in a silver grey Honda Civic before plunging to their deaths. According to reports, Heshan Hosein, 18, his sister Shado Hosein, 16, and their cousin Keshan, 18, left the Wallerfield Racing Circuit on Sunday evening after attending a drag racing event. After visiting a relative, they proceeded west on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and, around 8.30 pm, while driving down the highway in the vicinity of the abandoned K-Mart mall, Heshan swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, pulled away from hitting the culvert overlooking the river and lost control of the car. The car flew from the east side of the river bank and soared 129 feet across the river before hitting the bank. The car then rolled 20 feet down, into the murky river bed.

Passersby quickly pulled the trio out of the vehicle and put them at the side of the road. Heshan and Shado died on impact, while Keshan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. When Newsday visited the William Trace, Waterloo Road, Arouca area where the victims lived, hostile family members refused to say anything. Police said: “What happened is that there was pure speed that the youth could not control. “To achieve that distance, the car had to be going over 150 kilometres per hour. “The youths were probably energised after going to drag racing and decided to drive out their fantasies, when they got caught in a situation, panicked and lost control.” Cpl Figaro of the Arouca Police Station is continuing investigations.

Husband demands answers in wife’s E-999 death

LALLCHAN Ramgoolie, the husband of Linda Ramgoolie, who died on Sunday shortly after she was thrown out of a E-999 police vehicle near the University of the West Indies intersection on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, is demanding answers to her death. “Why did the police break the light and not use their siren. “I want answers because my children now have no mother.” He has denied his wife was pregnant as has been reported. According to Lallchan, “My wife, our three children and I attended a cricket fete-match in Carenage when the children began to get irritable and asked to go home. “I agreed to take them home, while she decided to lime a bit. “From what I heard, sometime later she asked the police to take her home. However, on reaching the UWI intersection, the police vehicle broke the traffic light instead of using the siren, killing my wife. “Why did they did not use the siren?” He asked.

“And how did she get thrown out of the backseat in front of the car on to the road while none of the officers got a scratch?” Linda, 31, a stitcher at Tobiki Garments Factory in El Socorro and the mother of Vanessa, 10, Sadu, 7, and Raul, 5 months, died at 6.50 pm at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Linda’s angry father-in-law Mahadeo Ramgoolie, spoke highly of his daughter-in-law and also called for answers “She was committed to her family and it is wrong. She should not be snuffed out so. I want answers and will not take it so.” Constable Scott of the St Joseph Traffic Department is investigating the incident. In an unrelated matter, Veda Patraj, husband of Darsie Patraj, 46, who was killed instantly on Sunday evening when she attempted to cross the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the Aranjuez area, is appealing to the Government to put a proper walkover in the right places.

“The Government keeps putting walkovers in places where there are no people and where they are under used. It is time they put it where the people want to use it and where it can really protect lives.” According to reports, Darsie, a wrapper at Patraj Roti Shop in Woodbrook was crossing the highway at around 5.15 pm when she came into contact with a vehicle at the El Socorro intersection. Her body was completely crushed and her left leg was torn off. In an article in another daily newspaper, it was claimed that Darsie had a narcotic problem but angry family members, including her husband, denied this. Darsie did not smoke and only takes an occasional drink. It appears somebody wants to smear the family name, family members said.
