Cops quiz ‘Uncle Khalid’ in wife’s death

PRINCES TOWN businessman Khalid “Uncle Khalid” Mohammed was yesterday questioned by homicide detectives who are currently probing the death of his wife, Mala Mohammed. Mohammed gave a statement to police investigators at Police Headquarters in San Fernando yesterday morning. Mohammed’s meeting which was requested by the police at 10.45 yesterday morning lasted one and a half hours. The police made it clear that Uncle Khalid was not a suspect. He was questioned by Inspector Fitzgerald George and Cpl Celestine Philip. Mohammed is to announce the offer of a reward for information leading to his wife’s killers.

Yesterday, Mohammed was accompanied to the police station by his attorneys, Prakash Ramadhar, Subhas Panday and Brian Debideen.
Ramadhar later told Newsday the police wanted to speak with Mohammed about his wife’s death and they had been trying to arrange a meeting all week. “My client wishes to have the matter settled as soon as possible because he is being butchered, and all sorts of things are being said about him in certain sections of the media.” Mohammed has engaged the services of a private investigator to find the killers. Debideen told Newsday that Mohammed would soon be making a public announcement on the offer of a reward to anyone who can supply information leading to the capture of Mala’s killers.

Mala was gunned down at her home in Princes Town on May 13, shot at point blank range in the back of the head and shoulder. The attack took place in the garage of her home after Mala had returned shortly before midnight in her Volvo car from a meeting with relatives. Her assailants did not take anything and US$3,000 was found in a wallet in the car. Mohammed was out of the country when the murder occurred. Mohammed, 49, was yesterday telephoned and asked to visit the Homicide Office in San Fernando. Mohammed was questioned, Debideen confirmed, about matters pertaining to his relationship with wife Mala. He said that Mohammed was fully cooperative with investigators. He also confirmed for Newsday that Mohammed was asked about financial arrangements, if any, with his wife.
