Eight illegal immigrants held

A LATE night exercise by  police from the Immigration Department resulted in the detention of eight illegal immigrants, five of whom are Spanish-speaking women while the remaining three are a family originally from Guyana. The exercise was led by Cpl Michael Marshall and included PC Swamber, WPC Marva Prince, WPC Avril Francis and Immigration Officer Jeremy Singh. Officials swooped down on a hotel in Chaguanas around midnight on Wednesday where they arrested five women, who were reportedly speaking with men in the hotel at the time. The women’s travel documents revealed they had all overstayed their alloted time.

Among the women held were four Venezuelans and one Colombian, all who were eventually taken to a police station in South Trinidad. A Guyanese family of three, staying illegally in this country, were also held at a house in Caroni Savannah Road late Wednesday evening. The family included a mother, father and their son. The trio were unable to produce official travel documents to sanction their presence to police officers and were taken into custody. All eight illegal immigrants would be questioned by Inquiry Officers attached to the Immigration Department and then deported back to their respective countries.
