2 held with deadly Mac 10 sub-machine gun

Police sources said the Mac 10 is small enough to be hidden in a jacket and though compact in size, is capable of discharging one hundred rounds of ammunition within seconds. Quite literally, sources said, it is capable of spraying bullets.

Police reported that at about 4 am, Tunapuna police officers were on mobile patrol along the Eastern Main Road when on nearing a night club, they observed two men seated in a white Nissan car parked at the front of the club. On seeing the officers, the men tried to hide in the car.

The officers surrounded the suspects’ car and during a search, found the Mac 10 sub-machinegun and ammunition magazine loaded with 20 rounds of .9 mm ammunition.

Police questioned the men about the gun found in the vehicle, but they refused to respond. The men, who are said to be in their early 20s, are both from the Chaguanas area. Police said one of them is a sound engineer and the son of popular businessman while the other is said to be “well known” to the police and is a member of a religious sect based in central Trinidad.

The two were arrested and the sub-machine gun and ammunition were seized by police. The men were interrogated at the Tunapuna Police Station.

They were charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and 20 rounds of ammunition. Charges were laid by Cpl Lackraj. Others involved in the arrests included PCs Matthews, Simeon, Seetram and Morrison. The two were expected to appear before a Tunapuna Magistrate yesterday.

In an unrelated incident, Inter-Agency Task Force officers, acting on a tip-off, went to the rooftop of Building 32, Duncan Street, Port-of-Spain at about noon on Sunday and found a M&P .9 mm pistol along with 14 rounds of ammunition. No arrests was made.
